The Center for Behavioral Health and Learning

Center for Behavioral Health and Learning

Opened in the spring of 2024, the Center for Behavioral Health and Learning, “the Center,” added inpatient and outpatient medical and psychiatry capacity the UWMC-Northwest campus and is part of a new approach to caring for adults living with serious mental illness in Washington. The modern, natural light-filled building is increasing our region’s capacity to treat patients and training the next generation of mental health professionals. It also offers patient- and family-centered care programs to help people transition back to their home communities.

Behavioral health services available at the Center

  • A Geriatric Psychiatry inpatient unit, serving patients ages 60 and older.
  • Care for adults who need longer term involuntary psychiatric care for three months or more. Also, known as “long-term civil commitment,” a civil legal process.
  • Medical/surgical beds where staff can care for patients with behavioral health and/or medical needs.
  • The Garvey Institute Center for Neuromodulation which provides electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for a variety of diagnoses.

What to expect when your loved one is hospitalized

We know having a loved one with a serious mental health condition can be really hard, especially if they need to be hospitalized. We created a short video to help family members and caregivers know what to expect when a loved one is in our care at the Center.
