Opened in the spring of 2024, the Center for Behavioral Health and Learning, “the Center,” added 150 inpatient beds to the UWMC-Northwest campus and is part of an ambitious new approach to caring for individuals living with serious mental illness in Washington. The beautiful, modern building is increasing our region’s capacity to treat patients and preparing the next generation of mental health professionals. It also offers patient- and family-centered care programs to help people transition back to their communities.
Behavioral health services available at the Center
- A Geriatric Psychiatry inpatient unit, serving patients ages 60 and older.
- Care for adults who need longer term involuntary psychiatric care for three months or more. Also, known as “long-term civil commitment” which is a civil legal process that requires a person to be psychiatrically hospitalized.
- Medical/surgical beds where staff can care for patients with behavioral health and/or medical needs
- The Garvey Institute Center for Neuromodulation which provides electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) to both outpatients and inpatients.
What to expect when your loved one is hospitalized
We know having a loved one with a serious mental health condition can be really hard, especially if they need to be hospitalized. We created a short video to help family members and caregivers know what to expect when a loved one is in our care at the Center.
