
Opened in the spring of 2024, the Center for Behavioral Health and Learning, “the Center,” added inpatient and outpatient medical and psychiatry capacity the UWMC-Northwest campus and is part of a new approach to caring for adults living with serious mental illness in Washington. The modern, natural light-filled building is increasing our region’s capacity to treat patients and training the next generation of mental health professionals. It also offers patient- and family-centered care programs to help people transition back to their home communities.
Behavioral health services available at the Center
- A Geriatric Psychiatry inpatient unit, serving patients ages 60 and older.
- Care for adults who need longer term involuntary psychiatric care for three months or more. Also, known as “long-term civil commitment,” a civil legal process.
- Medical/surgical beds where staff can care for patients with behavioral health and/or medical needs.
- The Garvey Institute Center for Neuromodulation which provides electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for a variety of diagnoses.

We know having a loved one with a serious mental health condition can be really hard, especially if they need to be hospitalized. We created a short video to help family members and caregivers know what to expect when a loved one is in our care at the Center.
