Navigating the mental health system can be challenging because it’s not always clear what type of help is needed or where to start. At a high level, it can be useful to know the different types of professionals who may provide mental health care and some of the services available:
- Primary Care Provider: Often the first step, where you can discuss your mental health concerns. They can offer advice, some treatments, or refer you to a specialist.
- Therapists: These professionals help you talk through your feelings and challenges. They use different methods to support you, such as teaching coping skills or helping you change negative thinking patterns.
- Psychiatric Prescriber: These are doctors, psychiatric nurse practitioners or physician assistants who specialize in mental health and can prescribe medication if needed. They may work with a person’s therapists to coordinate care.
- Case Managers: They help connect you with resources, such as housing or financial support, and guide you through the system. Case management services are not covered by all insurance types.
- Support Groups: These are groups where people with similar experiences come together to share and support each other. They can be very helpful for feeling less alone.
- Crisis Services: For immediate help during a mental health crisis, there are hotlines, emergency rooms, and crisis teams available to provide more urgent care.
Learning about the different parts of the system can make it easier to find the right kind of support. There are many people and resources available to assist you and your loved one – many who’ve had a similar experience and can relate to what you’re going through. You are not alone!
